Evidence from over 1,300 women about their traumatic treatment during childbirth was used in an inquiry regarding the standards in maternity care in the UK. The Birth Trauma Inquiry into traumatic childbirths, has prompted the NHS England chief to acknowledge that the experiences ‘are simply not good enough’ and poor maternity care is “all-too-frequently tolerated as normal”.

The inquiry reported that an estimated 30,000 women per year in the UK have negative experiences during the delivery of their babies, and 1 in 20 women develop PTSD.

In the inquest findings, women complained they were not listened to when they felt something was wrong, were mocked or shouted at and denied basic needs such as pain relief.

The inquiry’s authors call for a maternity system “where poor care is the exception rather than the rule”.

A new maternity commissioner is to be appointed to lead the overhaul of standards in UK maternity care, is a key recommendation following the Birth Trauma Inquiry into traumatic childbirths.

Jenna Kisala, Senior Medical Negligence Solicitor at Howells Solicitors, says “We frequently deal with women who have had traumatic experiences when they or their babies have suffered injury due to negligence at the hands of medical professionals. The reality is sub-standard care is all too frequently treated as normal, and families should not hesitate to seek professional legal support when dealing with such cases. A legal claim won’t take the pain away from the situation, but it can equip your family to cope with the harm caused.”
