How Much Does Divorce Cost? Transparent Fees Explained

A fixed-fee divorce works in the exact same way as traditional proceedings, but you know precisely what you will pay before the process even begins. If you are looking to end your marriage cleanly without contested property disputes or child arrangements, our fixed packages offer an incredibly cost-effective solution.

We break our fixed fees down clearly depending on which side of the proceedings you are on:

1. If You Are Starting the Proceedings (The Applicant)

As the applicant, you are responsible for initiating the divorce and submitting the legal paperwork to the court, which our team handles entirely on your behalf.

  • Our Fixed Fee: £399 + VAT (£79.80)

  • Mandatory Government Court Fee: £593

  • Total Standard Cost: £1,071.80 (plus any minor disbursements, such as official translations for overseas marriage certificates).

2. If You Are Responding to the Proceedings (The Respondent)

If your spouse has already issued divorce papers against you, our fixed-fee solicitors will manage the legal response, ensure your interests are protected, and oversee the paperwork required to finalize the divorce.

  • Our Fixed Fee: £275 + VAT (£55.00)

  • Government Court Fee: £0 (There is no court fee to pay if you are the respondent).

  • Total Cost: £330.00 (plus any individual disbursements).

Please note that these fees cover the legal work required to bring your marriage to an official end. Resolving separate disputes regarding long-term financial consent orders, property division, or child custody agreements may incur additional costs, which our team will always discuss with you openly far in advance.

How Our Fixed Fee Divorce Process Works

Our services are designed to minimize conflict and keep your stress to an absolute minimum. We can manage your primary divorce on a fixed-fee basis and seamlessly handle related child maintenance or financial asset negotiations separately or at a later stage, matching your exact pace.

The Howells Service Promise:

  • No Surprises: We provide written cost agreements upfront and keep you updated at every single stage.

  • Less Stress: We prioritize finding amicable, constructive solutions through collaborative law and mediation, keeping you out of the courtroom whenever possible.

  • Nationwide Remote Representation: While we have physical offices across South Yorkshire, we provide our full range of fixed-fee divorce services remotely via phone, email, and secure digital meetings. This allows you to access Tier 1 legal support from the comfort of your home, anywhere in England and Wales.

How long does a fixed-fee divorce take?

If the process is uncontested and there are no external complications, a fixed-fee divorce typically takes between 8 and 10 months to complete. The exact timeline depends heavily on how quickly your spouse returns paperwork and the current administrative backlog within the family court system.

Can you contest a fixed-fee divorce?

Following the introduction of the No-Fault Divorce laws, it is no longer legally possible for a spouse to contest or block a divorce application, unless there is a specific dispute regarding the legal jurisdiction of the court.

Fixed Fee Divorce Frequently Asked Questions

A fixed-fee divorce offers a clear, upfront cost for handling your divorce, covering all standard steps without unexpected charges.

Since April 2022, no-fault divorce applies in England and Wales. You simply state that the marriage has irretrievably broken down—no blame or evidence required. Find out more on What are the Grounds for Divorce?

If your spouse ignores the divorce application, you can apply for a deemed service or alternative service order. In some cases, the court may allow the divorce to proceed without their response. Our team can help you navigate these steps quickly.

Yes. Early legal advice and cooperation can help achieve a friendly, stress-free divorce. Mediation and collaborative law are effective options. Resolution accredited practitioners such as at Howells aim for an amicable divorce and to keep costs and stress to a minimum. Find out more on How to Achieve an Amicable Divorce in the UK

Couples with straightforward cases—no disputes over finances or children—are usually eligible. Complex cases may require bespoke pricing.

Additional costs only arise if extra work is needed, such as contested financial proceedings. Your family law solicitor will discuss any potential costs far in advance with you.

While a DIY divorce online might seem cheap initially, it does not legally resolve or close down claims against your future income, assets, property, or pensions. Forgoing a professional solicitor puts you at extreme risk of your ex-spouse making financial claims against you years down the line.

Yes. Even if you and your spouse part on completely amicable terms and agree on asset splits, that agreement is not legally binding until a judge approves a formal Financial Consent Order or Clean Break Order. Getting this order is essential to achieving true financial independence.

A fixed-fee divorce typically takes 8–10 months to complete if there are no complications. The timeline depends on how quickly paperwork is processed and how busy the family courts are. Choosing an experienced solicitor can help avoid delays and ensure your divorce runs smoothly.
